6 Basement Decorating Ideas

by Lee Dobbins

A few simple basement decorating tips can turn your unused space into a new room for the whole family. If you treat it like any other room, it can actually form another floor of your house! While many people think the basement is a dark and dreary place, this can actually be appealing in some room designs. Here's some ideas on how you can transform your basement from dull to dreamy.

Home Theater - you can turn your basement into a great home theater with only a little bit of work. The major thing you'll be needing to do with your basement in this regard is to use acoustic lining for the walls and ceiling to keep the sound from penetrating both to and from the rest of the house. This assures total sound quality in a closed room. Basements are great for home theaters because most of them are already pretty dark, but you need to make sure you have a good dehumidifier to protect the electronic equipment.

Game room - this is a common practice these days. Lots of people are putting ping pong tables, pool table and other game tables into their basements today. And with all that fun going on, no one will even notice they are in the basement. You can do this quite inexpensively with some colorful paint and good lighting.

Home Gym - this is a simple idea you can use with very little modification to your basement. You won't have to worry about marking up the floors or walls and the concrete gives the equipment a solid footing. Just add a few mirrors to the wall and some rubber mats on the floor and your ready to workout. Of course, you'll want to be sure that you have good ventilation and are breathing in nice fresh air.

The basement is a perfect place for all your tools, so why not build a basement workshop? Depending on what you use your workshop for, the basement may be better than the garage. If you make small things in your workshop, the basement is perfect but if you build large cabinets then you might have to make the basement door larger to get them out.

You can spend as much or as little as you want when decorating your basement. However, like with anything else in the home decorating area, the more you spend, both in time and money, the better the outcome!
